World AIDS Day is to be observed tomorrow across the globe with some 33 million people living with the virus in 2007, a report of the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) showed.
In its “2008 Report on Global AIDS Epidemic,” UNAIDS said the rate of new infections has gone down in several countries but this “favorable” trend has been “partially offset” by increases in new infections in other nations.
“The overall number of people living with HIV has increased as a result of the ongoing number of new infections each year and the beneficial effects of more widely available antiretroviral therapy,” UNAIDS said.
Sub-Saharan Africa is still the most heavily affected by HIV, accounting for 67 percent of all HIV cases and for 72 percent of AIDS deaths in 2007.
Infections in most countries there have begun to decline but nations like Kenya had registered a rise in infection from 6.7 percent in 2003 to 8.5 percent in 2007.
The report, however, shows that there are “high infection levels” among “injecting drug users, men who have sex with men and sex workers” in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
To effectively contain HIV/AIDS, the UNAIDS has underscored the need to address “societal causes of HIV risk and vulnerability.”
“Long-term success in responding to the epidemic will require sustained progress in reducing human rights violations associated with it, including gender inequality, stigma and discrimination,” the report stated.
In the Philippines, the Department of health (DOH) had registered a total of 59 new infections in October, bringing to 3,515 the total number of HIV/AIDS cases recorded since January 1984.
A report prepared by the DOH’s National Epidemiology Center showed that 13 of the 59 cases were those of overseas Filipino workers who are required to undergo HIV screening by their employer-countries.
“Nine of (the 13 cases) were males. All cases acquired the infection through sexual contacts – 10 heterosexual, one homosexual and two bisexual,” the report states.
To strengthen anti-HIV/AIDS efforts in the Asia Pacific, the UNAIDS, Asian Development Bank, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World health Organization launched last Friday the first-ever one-stop “online resource hub” that will provide comprehensive and easy to access HIV and AIDS data in the region.
The website, www.aidsdatahub.org and online database: www:devinfo.info/Evidencetoaction, and Hiv Aids Statistics carries multiple sources of data and reports, powerpoint presentations and reviews on HIV and AIDS situations in 24 countries and Hong Kong.
Meantime, UNAIDS records showed that 75 million Asian men “buy sex regularly” making them “key drivers” of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Asia-Pacific.
According to Amala Reddy, UNAIDS regional advisor for Strategic Information, the HIV epidemic in Asia is caused by unprotected paid sex, sexual contact between men and intravenous drug use with shared needles.
Reddy said there are 75 million men who patronize commercial sex from about 10 million Asian women and another 20 million men “who have sex with men or injecting drug users.”
But Reddy said the “limiting factor” that makes the Asian HIV epidemic different from that in Africa, which accounts for a majority of HIV/AIDS cases worldwide, is “that (Asian) women generally do not have multiple sex partners.” – With Lorraine Olivar

Why are only 2.5% of death in South Africa from 'AID$'?
This data was just published by Statistics South Africa.
http://www.statssa.gov.za/publications/s...
Looking at table 4.4, HIV/AIDS was listed as the cause of death in 2.5% of cases, 14532 in 2005, up from 13440 in 2004.
These numbers are not going up, people. This is supposed to be in a country where 5 million or so people were supposed to be 'HIV positive'.
The standard response by the orthodoxy is to add all the influenza and TB cases to pad HIV/AIDS deaths, but they still have to explain how so many doctors would risk their licenses by committing the crime of listing the wrong cause of death. And this, while virtually all doctors are orthodox believers.
Dear Vortx, You are right. I have only read 30,000 studies over the past seventeen years. I know nothing. As for the latency period you forget they have been saying SA has had an AIDS epidemic for over twenty years now. So why is no one dying?
The fact that not enough people are dying in SA is really bothering you and so are the statistics so, come on over to SA and see for yourself. I would be very interested to know where you got all your information especially about the doctors committing crimes and listing wrong causes of death? South Africans will find this interesting and maybe we can pursue this issue further and see what we discover?

new trends of giving first aid, CPR, rescue breathing
Protocols for cardiopulmonary resuscitation HAS changed.
Relative to Adult CPR, the major changes include-
The position for compressions - it no longer refers to the xiphoid process but instead uses a simpler technique similar to that used in infants; a position on the sternum (breast bone), upon an imaginary line drawn from nipple to nipple (easily determined on a male but less so on a female, for obvious reasons).
The compression to breathing ratio - whether for one rescuer or two rescuers is 30:2.
It is being stressed that if sufficient personnel are available, the compressor person should be relieved after 5 minutes regardless of their stamina to continue. It is believed that, despite the obvious onset of fatigue, technique becomes faulty in this short amount of time. Since manual chest compressions are only believed to be about 25% effective at circulating blood (relative to a functional heart contraction), even proper technique is less than best so there is no room for worse.
If only rescue breaths are necessary, give one breath every 5-6 seconds. If an advanced airway (e.g., endotracheal tube) has been placed, a breath is given every 6-8 seconds.

Where do I find Statistic Info for a project? Website?
I am working on a report. I need to find out which country has the most NGOs, per capita or in general. My hunch is Cambodia, but I want numbers if possible. Does anyone know a statistic website that might have information and statistics on international aid?
Many thanks
You have already done a web search and have not been successful. But my experience is that a lot of information is out there, but difficult to find. I suggest that you get help with your search from a librarian. They can do amazing stuff, and they may be able to find the information you are looking for in places other than the web. The good thing about "non web" sources is that teachers tend to think they involve more work. They don't really, of course, but the teacher thinks that anything you cite from a website magically appeared in front of you without your having to look for it, while citations from books or magazines look like some effort was put in. Unfair, but true. Let the librarian help you find what you are looking for.

QUESTIONS REGARDING GLOBAL ISSUES?
Hey, Hey. I am doing some side research on some topics that I am finding very interesting and pressing.
Could you help me find some of the official answers and statistics to the following things?
~Comparing the efficiencies of different alternative fuels to oil...
~HIV/AIDS prevalence in developing/developed countries vs. sexual education rates/women's education.
~projected global population growth vs. projected demand for food/water
And no, this isn't for a university or school course; I'm just doing this for some side projects regarding a group I am involved with.
Oh, and if you could provide with references that would be divine.
wikipedia is godly lol
