HIV is transmitted various ways:
Sexual route. The majority of HIV infections are acquired through unprotected sexual relations. Sexual transmission occurs when there is contact between sexual secretions of one partner with the rectal, genital or mouth mucous membranes of another. The probability of transmission per act is between 1 in 53 to 1 in 10,000 for the case of receptive vaginal sex (Pilcher et al., 2004), 1 in 8000 in the case of insertive vaginal sex, 1 in 1000 in the case of insertive anal sex, and between 1 in 100 to 1 in 30 in the case of receptive anal sex.
Blood or blood product route. This transmission route is particularly important for intravenous drug users, hemophiliacs and recipients of blood transfusions and blood products. health care workers (nurses, laboratory workers, doctors, etc) are also concerned, although more rarely. Also concerned by this route are people who give and receive tattoos and piercings.
Mother-to-child route. The transmission of the virus from the mother to the child can occur in utero during the last weeks of pregnancy and at childbirth. Sometimes people may just feel weak and have swollen glands. I know one person who never had any symptoms. She found out she had HIV when she wanted to donate blood to the Red Cross. She probably had a flu and just thought that she was sick, when in fact, those were probably her symptoms.

Iam very worried i may have HIV. 13 week ago I had sex with a woman & couple of wk later found out i had contracted Chlamydia. I had the anti biotics for this & everything seemed to have cleared up. But for the last 5 week, i have had other symptoms such as mouth ulcers, abit of a white tongue, the odd night sweats & whats worrying me the most is that i have ben getting constant pains around my body, mainly in the upper arms, wrists & back of my legs. I had Hiv test but only after 8 week of possible infection which came back negative. I spoke to the Dr bowt my symptoms & he told that it wont be HIV coz it takes years for symptoms to show ?? Now also, my current girlfriend has been having funny periods (the last couple) & strong stomach pains which is also getting me worried !! My Dr sent me to patholgy at the hospital to run some blood tests for other things, but i wont get results til nxt wk.Can anyone shed any light on what it may be or the possibility of it being hiv.
