Celebrities whether they are actors, models, or sports players are distinctively in the spot light every day of their live.  It is very indispensable that they are always conscious of their conclusions and think them through to the fullest because any defective move that they make, the tabloids, news, and video cameras will be all over them to make a story of it.  Sometimes the act by a famous person doesn't even have to be that huge of news, but the media does occasionally blow the story out of ratio making it more of a gossip issue rather than a true story.  Roberto Alomar is a classic baseball player, but will this now demolish his ever going reputation in all of his fans?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) strikes any individual - young and old, the rich or poor, the famous and unknowns. The nameless victims who get infected go unnoticed, but celebrities who do, always get the world's attention. This is a list of the top 10 celebrities who are known to have or to have had the virus known as HIV, including those who have passed from physical life (whether from AIDS or another cause).

1) Rock Hudson - Iconic Hollywood leading man, the firstborn major American celebrity whose AIDS diagnosis was made public. Unquestionably, he was one of the most popular and well-known movie stars of his time. The public got a double shock when it was revealed he had AIDS and was gay. In 1985, Hudson passed away at the age of 59.

2)Freddie Mercury - Queen's lead singer cited for his vocal abilities and his charisma. His death led to The Mercury Phoenix Trust anti-AIDS charity and the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness. Died in 1991 at the age of 45 and was inducted into Rock and Roll's Hall of Fame in 2001.

3)Liberace - Flamboyant Las Vegas singer and piano player known for candelabras, lavish costumes, exotic cars and kitchy homes. In the '70s and 80s, Liberace was a major box office attraction in Las Vegas. In 1987, he passed away due to complicatednesses from AIDS.

4)Arthur Ashe - one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Was the basi African-American to win a Grand Slam and he went on to gather three. Ashe transcended tennis to become a social activist who led public protests versus apartheid in South Africa; became infected with HIV by way of transfusion for the duration of heart surgery. This Tennis Hall of Famer passed away in 1993 at the age of 49.

5) Isaac Asimov - famous science fiction writer and biochemist. Two of his works were turned into highly successful films - I, Robot and Bicentennial Man. Asimov, who was also popular for his science books, became infected by transfused blood for the duration of heart surgery.

6) Earvin "Magic" Johnson - One of the greatest NBA players of all time, Johnson is widely considered as the best point guard ever to play the game. Since publicly announcing he had been infected with the virus HIV, Johnson proceeds to be an advocate for HIV/AIDS preventative action and safe sex.

7)Greg Louganis - Olympic gold medalist in diving. Was the most outstanding novice athlete in 1984 and went on to win back-to-back Olympic golds in both the 3m and 10m diving events. Following the proclamation of his HIV status in 1995, Louganis was dropped by majority of his corporate sponsors. Since retiring from diving, Louganis has ventured into acting largely in off-Broadway plays.

8)Tommy Morrison - world champion boxer better known for his role as Tommy Gunn in Rocky V. In 1996 it was revealed he was HIV-positive which mechanically retired him from boxing as a competitor. Currently, he is carrying out or participate in a career in Mixed Martial Arts and is attempting to mount a comeback in boxing.

9)Ryan White - expelled from high school because of his infection which he got from contaminated blood for the duration of treatment. White, who was a hemophiliac, became a poster child for HIV/AIDS at a time when the public knew very little regarding the disease. White made a lot of celebrity friends including Michael Jackson whose song "Gone Too Soon" was a tribute to the teenage AIDS victim. White passed away in 1990 at a young age of 18.

10) Esteban De Jesus - a world lightweight champion boxer from Puerto Rico. Famous for his trilogy with Roberto Duran, "Vita" had a life full of controversy, difficultnesses and scandals. Sentenced to life in jail for murder, he became a preacher and started to turn his life around. De Jesus acquired HIV and succumbed to full-blown AIDS in 1989.

About the Author
Victoria A. Harden retired in 2006 after twenty years as the founding conductor of the Office of NIH History at the National Institutes of health. She has written some articles regarding AIDS and has lectured widely on it is history. Dr. Harden is the author of Inventing the NIH: Federal Biomedical Research Policy, 1887–1937 (1986) and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: History of a Twentieth-Century Disease (1990), the latter winning the Henry Adams Prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government. She received the American Historical Association’s 2006 Herbert Feis Award for outstanding contributions to public history. In 2007 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for the History of medicine. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Society was not prepared in 1981 for the aspect of a new infectious disease, but we have since learned that emergent and reemerging impairment of normal physiological functions will carry on to challenge humanity. AIDS at 30 is the initial history of HIV/AIDS written for a frequent audience that emphasizes the medical response to the epidemic.

Award-winning medical historian Victoria A. Harden approaches the AIDS virus from philosophical and intellectual perspectives in the history of medical science, talking about the routine of scientific discovery, scientific evidence, and how laboratories found the cause of AIDS and developed therapeutic interventions. Similarly, her book places AIDS as the original infectious disease to be recognized simultaneously international as a single phenomenon.

After years of believing that vaccines and antibiotics would keep deadly epidemics away, researchers, doctors, patients, and the public were forced to abandon the arrogant assumption that they had conquered infectious diseases. By presenting an accessible discussion of the history of HIV/AIDS and analyzing how distinct elements of society modern or hindered the response to the disease, AIDS at 30 illustrates for both medical pros and standard readers how medicine identifies and evaluates new infectious impairment of normal physiological functions speedily and what political and cultural constituents limit the medical community’s response.

5Understanding AIDS Understanding Medical Research
By D. Rodrigues
With so much written about AIDS one may wonder what more can be said? The answer is found in the pages of AIDS at 30. This work offers a fresh perspective free of the political and culturally driven distortions that color so much of what has previously been written on this topic. As is so often said, history written in the passion of the moment cannot remain objective and this was never truer with something as politically charged as the HIV epidemic. Now, 30 years into this epidemic, this may be one of the first books about AIDS that tells the story with a clear historical perspective. Moreover, the author uses AIDS as a fascinating case study into the working of modern medical research. For most of us, it's a complex and mysterious enterprise where we know little of how things actually work. AIDS at 30 provides a fascinating window into the world of science and medicine. Prepare to have a number of your assumptions toppled and prepare to be fascinated by a rich cast of characters driven not only by science but by the same human forces that govern us all. For the sake of full disclousure, I worked with Dr. Harden in the past and helped her collect some of the source material used in this book.

5Informative & Readable
By Scott Deberg
Having recently been diagnosed as HIV+, this book was an interesting journey into learning the wheres, whys & hows of this chronic disease. It is very readable, understandable and occasionally fascinating, as it delves into the origins of the disease, the history of our national reaction at the time, and what great strides we've made in helping to turn the disease from a death sentence to a chronic, though manageable, condition. Definitely recommended for HIV+ patients, and all who want to learn about the disease.
