Question about testing treatments for AIDS?
You are testing treatments for AIDS sufferers and find that 75% respond very well and 25% show no improvement or decline in health after your experimental treatment. You should:
a. conclude you have proven the effectiveness of the drug
b. conclude that only 75% of AIDS victims should be trated
c. review the results, modify the drug or the dosage, and repeat the experiment
d. discontinue experimentation because 25% patients did not improve
e. begin work on an entirely new drug
I am thinking it's either A or C. I'm more for C though. What do you think?
C is obviously the choice, because you need to find out *why* the 25% did not respond to the drug as expected.
Chosing A is saying that you're finished but you can't be finished until you know the why for the 25%.
B is the same - you need to know the why of the 25% so you can determine who will be in the 75% group.
D and E are just dumb. You don't make just one attempt at something and then give up when it doesn't work perfectly, especially not in medicine or any other science where repeatability of tests is the name of the game.
